Bookmarks are ╥pointers╙ to files or directories that are available over the Internet. Fetch uses bookmarks in two ways. First, individual bookmarks can be saved in small files. When Fetch opens these files, it automatically opens the referenced directory, or downloads the referenced file. Second, Fetch can organize bookmarks into bookmark lists. These lists are displayed in their own windows in Fetch, and are a convenient way to organize groups of bookmarks. Bookmark lists can be saved as files and opened. ╥Fetch Shortcuts╙╩is a special bookmark list that is automatically saved (in the Preferences folder) and automatically re-opened. The bookmarks in ╥Fetch Shortcuts╙ (which are also called shortcuts) appear in the Shortcuts pop-up menu in the New Connections╔ dialog, and the Open Shortcuts hierarchical menu under the File menu.
To save an individual bookmark in a file, select the remote file or directory in question, and choose Save Bookmark╔ from the File menu. If you are running System 7.5 or newer you can save a bookmark for the current directory by dragging the small open-folder icon to the Finder. These bookmark files can be opened by double-clicking them in the Finder or choosing Open Bookmark File╔ from the File menu. Fetch saves individual bookmarks in a format that was originated by Peter Lewis╒s Anarchie program, and therefore bookmark files are interchangable between the two programs.
To create a bookmark list, choose New Bookmark List from the File menu. There are a number of ways to add a bookmark to a list. The New Bookmark╔ item in the Customize menu lets you create a bookmark manually. You can also paste Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) into a bookmark list. If you are running System 7.5, you can drag file names or the open-folder icon from the Fetch transfer window into a bookmark list, to create bookmarks for those items. You can also drag text URLs, for example from an e-mail program or newsreader, into a bookmark list.
Bookmark lists can be sorted by clicking on the column headings, and System 7.5 users can reorder them by dragging individual bookmarks to new positions in the list (note that sorting the list results in the loss of any custom ordering you may have done). Individual bookmarks can be cut and pasted or dragged between bookmark lists. The entire lists can be saved (with Save from the File menu) and opened (with Open Bookmark File╔ from the File menu). Fetch can also open bookmark lists created by Anarchie.
To open a directory that is referenced by a bookmark in a bookmark list, simply double-click the bookmark or type Enter while it is selected. Likewise, double-clicking or typing Enter will prompt Fetch to download a file referenced by a bookmark. Alternatively, System 7.5 users can drag the bookmark to a Finder window or the desktop in order to initiate the download. And uploads can be initiated by dragging files and/or folders to a bookmark for the destination. Fetch will automatically open a connection and perform the operation.
To edit a bookmark in a bookmark list, choose Edit Bookmark╔ from the Customize menu or Option-double-click on it. Control-double-clicking on a bookmark brings up the New Connection╔ dialog, filled in with information from the bookmark.
NOTE: If you save a password as part of a bookmark that password will be no more secure than the disk it is saved on. Be certain that others do not have access to your disk before saving a bookmark that includes a password.
